PIA Opposes Ballot Measure 42
The PIA is part of a coalition opposed to Oregon's Ballot Measure 42 - the credit scoring issue.
The PIA Oregon/Idaho board of directors has chosen to oppose Oregon's Ballot Measure 42. The reasons are many. Here are a few of them:
- When it comes to credit scoring, insurance and consumers, Oregon already has the most restrictive consumer protection laws in the nation. Companies cannot use credit scoring to raise rates or drop existing customers. Credit information can only be used when a consumer first applies for insurance.
- 70% of Oregon's consumers benefit by the lower rates effected from these strict laws and insurance companies being able to use credit scores to calculate rates.
- Businesses are impacted, they will likely see higher insurance costs and historically those costs are passed on to consumers.
- Oregon could become the only state in the union prohibiting insurance companies from evaluating the financial management practices of a business when determining rates for commercial property, premises liability, products liability, professional liability, automobile, workers compensation, inland marine, ocean marine and umbrella insurance.
The bottom-line: passing Measure 42 will force responsible businesses to subsidize less responsible, marginal businesses. For personal insurance, individual Oregonians with good credit history will subsidize those with poor credit.
